Most people calling about a bathroom have been looking at the same room for a couple of years already. The tile is dated, the vanity is too small, and there is a soft spot in the floor near the shower that nobody wants to think about. You have priced it out once before, got a number that made no sense, and put it off again.
The number makes more sense when somebody has actually looked behind the wall. That is where the real cost of a bathroom lives, and it is why we open things up before quoting rather than after.
What usually goes wrong in a bathroom remodel
The most common mistake is not a construction mistake at all. People follow trends instead of taking the time to see what they actually like. They pick a couple of tiles, sign, and end up in a bathroom they do not love and cannot easily change. Getting a real design in front of you first costs a little time and it is the difference between a room you tolerate and one you enjoy every morning.
The construction mistakes cluster in two places. Waterproofing gets rushed or skipped, so water gets behind the tile and the failure shows up years later as something much more expensive than tile. And the subfloor never gets leveled, so the shower does not drain where it is supposed to and the standing water finds the seams.
Neither one is visible when the job is finished. Both are the reason a bathroom lasts fifteen years or five. We build with Schluter waterproofing systems, and Joseph trained at Schluter's Innovation Workshop. The prep under the surface is where the money quietly goes, and it is the part worth paying for.
What we do in a bathroom
A full bathroom remodel with us covers the whole room: demolition, any framing changes, plumbing and electrical rough-ins with licensed tradesmen, waterproofing, tile, fixtures, vanity, lighting and finish work.
Shower Remodeling and Tub-to-Shower Conversions
are the most requested piece. Tile, acrylic or fiberglass, and the choice drives both the price and how long it lasts. Fiberglass is the budget end and it discolors and scratches sooner than most people expect. Acrylic is the middle, low maintenance, and holds its appearance far longer. Tile is the premium option, fully customizable, and lasts when what is behind it is done properly. A conversion runs $7,500 to $15,000. One to two weeks for a surround, two to three for custom tile.
Accessibility and Aging-in-Place Upgrades
matter more than the name suggests. A curbless entry means walking straight in off the floor with nothing to step over, which is the difference between independence and a fall for somebody using a cane or a walker. Even when grab bars are not needed yet, we put solid blocking behind the walls during the build, so they can be added later by screwing into real studs rather than into drywall and hope. If stepping over the tub has become the risky part of somebody's day, this is the fix, and it is worth doing before it becomes urgent.
Tile Work
is where a bathroom is won or lost. We prep and level the substrate first, then waterproof, then tile. Floor tile costs meaningfully more than vinyl and the prep is a real part of that difference, particularly if a heated floor is going in underneath.
Heated Floors
only make sense to install while the floor is already open, which means deciding early rather than wishing later. It runs under the tile as part of the waterproofing assembly, not as an afterthought bolted on top.
Bathrooms in older Stark County homes
Older homes here bring a specific set of problems, and none of them are unusual once you have opened enough of them.
The plumbing is the hard part. Cast iron drain lines are common and they are considerably harder to redirect if you are changing a layout. That is not a reason to avoid moving anything, but it belongs in the number before you sign rather than as a change order in week two.
Water damage over the years is the other one. Subfloors need replacing more often than not. We regularly find rotted wood under a shower that looked completely fine from above. Sometimes the framing is different from what you would expect, or there is plaster instead of drywall.
The permitting process here is no different from anywhere else in Ohio. It is the houses themselves that change the approach, and knowing what is likely behind the wall in a Hartville or North Canton home built in the sixties is worth more than a lower headline number that does not survive contact with the demolition.

What it costs
A mid-size full bathroom, around 40 square feet, so a standard eight by five, runs $20,000 to $35,000 with a tiled shower. A cosmetic refresh starts at $8,000 to $15,000. A large or high-end build runs $35,000 to $60,000 and up. A tub-to-shower conversion sits at $7,500 to $15,000.
What moves the number, in order: tile versus a surround in the shower, tile versus LVP on the floor, whether a heated floor is going in, glass enclosures, and the vanity. Shower fixtures alone range from $500 to $5,000. Cabinets range further than that.
The deciding factor between a full gut and a refresh is usually price. When price is not the constraint, it comes down to the layout. If you are already investing serious money and you do not like where things are, changing the layout is usually worth it. If the layout works, we renovate what is there.

A mid-size full remodel, around 40 square feet with a tiled shower, runs $20,000 to $35,000. A cosmetic refresh starts at $8,000 to $15,000, and a large or high-end build runs $35,000 to $60,000 and up. The range depends on tile versus surround, floor material, fixtures and what we find once the walls are open.
A shower conversion with a surround is one to two weeks. Custom tile is two to three, occasionally four for a large or intricate design. A full bathroom is longer. Older homes take longer than newer ones, every time, because more turns up behind the wall.
If you have another tub in the house, keeping one is worth it for resale, and beyond that it comes down to whether you actually use it. If you rarely do, a conversion is usually the better room. If it is the only bathroom and stepping over the tub has become a safety issue, the conversion is the right call regardless.
Fiberglass is the economical option: lightweight, functional, and it discolors and scratches over time. Acrylic costs more, looks better for longer, and needs very little maintenance. Tile is the premium end, fully customizable, and it lasts the longest when the waterproofing behind it is done properly.
