Bathroom Remodeling for North Canton Homeowners

North Canton is a city, and it runs its bathrooms like one. Permits do not go to the county. They go to Development Services on the top floor of City Hall at 145 North Main Street, and a state-certified city inspector signs off the plumbing and electrical. The city also requires every contractor working inside the limits to be registered with it, bonded and insured, and it tells homeowners to check before they hire. We take that as a good sign for you. It is handled before the first day of your job.

The houses set the rest. The grid around Main Street, built while Hoover was still making vacuums a few blocks away, is 1940s and 1950s ranches on lots a tenth to a quarter of an acre. The one bathroom in them is original: a cast iron tub, a tile floor on a mud bed, a window in the shower. The streets beyond, toward Portage and Applegrove, are late fifties and sixties colonials and split-levels with a bath and a half, a fiberglass surround in the hall bath, and a master bath that was an afterthought.

Joseph Evans does the work himself. The shop is in Uniontown, six miles up Cleveland Avenue, and the first step is a fifteen to thirty minute phone call where you get a real range before anyone drives down.

Client Reviews

What Northeast Ohio Homeowners Say

"I truly wish I could give this young man 100 stars. He is VERY dedicated to doing the job right. I could tell from day one that he treated this room in my home like it was in his own home. My husband and I have been do it ourself people for over twenty years. He is 100% disabled now but Joe took the time to listen and do exactly what I asked of him. My husband's smile when he saw the room finished was a true blessing. Thank you for the great job you did on this half bath that will now serve as bathroom and first floor laundry. Thank you again from the bottom of my heart!!"

Julie Perry

"Joe with Redeemed Contracting recently completed a remodel of our very outdated master bath. We were very impressed from the start - Joe met with us to hear our ideas, formulated a plan and presented a very reasonable quote. He was very responsive to any questions and ideas and had great communication throughout the project. We are thrilled with Joe's work and the end result, and will use Redeemed again. We highly recommend Joe and his team at Redeemed Contracting!"

Sue Serbin

Hartville, OH

What a North Canton bathroom runs into

The mud-bed tile floor in a 1950 ranch is three inches of concrete over wire, and when it comes out the floor underneath is usually fine, which is the good news; the bad news is the cast iron drain under it that has to be cut if the layout changes. The window in the shower is the other one. Half the Hoover-era baths have one, and the fix is a new window unit rated for a wet wall, or closing it in and adding a fan. In the sixties colonials the hall bath keeps its tub and the master gets the attention: the surround comes off with the drywall behind it, and a tile shower on a Schluter waterproofing system goes in its footprint, so the plumbing stays put and the money goes to what you see. City sewer everywhere inside the limits, so no septic questions here; the only utility question is whether the house still has galvanized supply lines, and on a 1940s house it might.
